After more than four decades
as a broadcaster Alex Burton decided he wanted something more
permanent than throwing words and ideas into the air. He became a wood
turner. The wood turner must be respectful of the wood in his lathe.
The wood will determine what it wishes to be. Wood turners seek stumps
and slabs that hold knots, incipient rot and worm holes. Some times he
seeks bits of bark or stains from natural processes. Each piece is
unique. The woodturner’s art is revelatory. Burton has made bowls,
buckles and items for the kitchen from local woods. Some of his work
is widespread as admirers of something unique have sent his work
abroad. Now you have an opportunity to view some of the his pieces.

If you
have a treasured plank from a family barn or outstanding branch
from a tree on the homestead, you might give it to Burton and ask
that he turn it into something useful : a bowl, a plate, a
utilitarian drinking vessel or maybe just a nice round stick you
can use to point out sites of interest to visitors in your
community. |
