When I pick up a gourd
and begin to work with it, I’m not always sure what will happen.
Gourds lend themselves to all kinds of experiments. They are playful
and at the same time demanding. When a gourd with which I am working
finally announces that it is finished, I often find myself admiring
the piece and wondering where it came from. . It is as though the
gourds have something to say, and it is my responsibility to help
find theirs voices and allow them to speak.
When my gourds leave me and take up their
abode in someone else’s home, I do not sense a loss. Rather I
rejoice that I have been able to make visible in my gourd creations
feelings that call out to others. I sense a communion of sorts with
those who are drawn to my gourds.
